Social Capital Smart Parent — 6-Month Guided Family Program

6-Month Guided Family Program · Ages 14–27

People already know your name.

Your child may just not know them yet.

Coworkers. Former coworkers. Friends. Neighbors. Business owners. Community leaders. People who trust you, respect you, and have heard you talk about your children.

Your child may have never met them — but they may already know your child's name. That's social capital your family may not even realize it has.

One price per family. Parent and young person participate together.

Schools and programs spend billions measuring what your child knows.

But who is measuring who they can reach?

We tell young people all the time: “It's not just what you know. It's who you know.”

Then we send them into the world without ever helping them figure out who they actually know, who knows them, how strong those connections are, or who their family may be able to reach.

That's a problem. Opportunities don't move through qualifications alone. Jobs. Internships. Scholarships. Career information. Mentors. Recommendations. Referrals. Introductions.

They also move through people.

Social Capital Smart Parent gives families a structured way to examine this overlooked part of their child's future — and start doing something about it.

Sticky notes labeled mentor, teacher, former supervisor, colleague, neighbor and friend connected by string to a single person at the center.

Your family may be richer in social capital than you think.

You don't have to be wealthy. You don't have to know a CEO.

A parent who has worked at the same company for 15 years may know people throughout that organization.

A grandparent may belong to a church, association, union, neighborhood organization, or professional community.

An aunt, uncle, neighbor, coach, teacher, former supervisor, family friend, or program staff member may be one connection away from someone working in your child's area of interest.

The problem isn't always that the connections aren't there. Sometimes nobody has ever taught the family how to recognize them.

That's where we start.

First, we find out where your child stands.

Before we start telling your child to “network,” we want to understand their current network. Through our Centrality Assessment, your family will begin examining your child's connections to the people, organizations, institutions, and industries related to their interests and future.

This is not a judgment of your family. It's a map.

And once we can see the map, we can start determining where your child needs to go next.

We look beyond simply “Who do you know?” We begin examining:

  • Who knows your child?
  • How strong are those connections?
  • How close are they to the opportunities your child wants?
  • What can your family already reach?
  • And where are the gaps?

Next, we identify what's missing.

Having a large network doesn't necessarily mean having the right network. Your child could know hundreds of people and still be socially distant from the career or opportunity they want.

That's why we help families identify gaps. Once you know what's missing, your family can stop networking randomly and start building connections with purpose.

Maybe your child needs greater connection to:

  • Industry professionals
  • Employers
  • Colleges & training institutions
  • Community organizations
  • Mentors
  • Career information
  • People who can make introductions

And then your family takes action.

This isn't a program where you pay $499, watch a few videos, and hope something changes. You have work to do.

Over six months, parents and young people complete practical Social Capital Smart activities designed to help them:

  • Discover connections
  • Strengthen connections
  • Reconnect with people they've lost touch with
  • Explore new organizations and institutions
  • Practice authentic interaction
  • Learn how to provide value to others
  • Maintain connections over time
  • Become more intentional about who enters their network

You'll have guidance and coaching along the way. But the goal is simple:

Move from knowing social capital matters to actually building it.

What could six months uncover?

We can't promise that any particular connection will produce a job, internship, scholarship, or opportunity.

But we can help your family stop leaving valuable connections undiscovered and unused.

  • Someone you've known for 12 years works at a company your child has been trying to enter.
  • A former coworker's spouse works in your child's career field.
  • Your child reconnects with last summer's supervisor instead of letting that connection disappear.
  • An organization two connections away opens up an entirely new career.

Your child will need more than a resume.

Education matters. Skills matter. Experience matters. But young people also need people who can provide information, advice, introductions, recommendations, referrals, encouragement, and access.

Talent determines what your child is capable of. Social capital can influence who ever gets the chance to discover it.

That's why we believe social capital literacy belongs in every family's preparation for the future.

People already know your name.

The question is: do they know your child's?

  • What does your child need to know, do, and show in order to show up properly?
  • Why have you not helped your child build and maintain connections to people you already know?
  • What opportunities has your child missed because of this?

Shape a Stronger Future for Your Young Adult (14-27) Through the Power of Social Capital

Join our Parent Initiative to build a brighter future for your family.

For too long, social capital literacy—the understanding of connections to key individuals, organizations, and institutions that create opportunities—has been overlooked by systems meant to support families and communities. Schools spend $7 billion annually measuring what students know, but not a dime measuring who they know. Meanwhile, 50% of college graduates are working in jobs that don’t require a degree.

That’s why we invite YOU to join the free Social Capital community—a transformative experience designed to help parents, families, and communities unlock the power of social capital for the next generation.
